Damien Hirst: skateboard decks for supreme new york

xmas is upon us and i was looking for two boards for two of my favorite girls in the world, now this may not be a girls dream but i think its pretty close as far as boards get. hirst and supreme have a long standing relationship and these are bound to be limited in their edition at supreme. try, if you can to get one... they are being collected, one of each by avid fans (fans of hirst more than supreme i would guess), saw a friend with 2 and he said its the only two he "didn't" have. good luck. a set is already available on ebay for $1,849.99. by dd

marmot: stockholm down jacket

"i'm sooo in stockholm dude!"
just the name brings me back memories of marvin.... but aside from that a good thing to have if you happen to be in the sierra, alps or new york city and want to keep warm. i just happen to be in one of em and enjoying the new purchase. so far so good. the puff jacket is not much for looks but the tear resistant down-proof fabric and durable vislon zippers is a serious contender in durability and the cold. from this utilitarian brand, known for its down fills, comes this 650 fill goose down (the higher the fill the warmer but also the less puffier - just learned that). the jacket also sports the added zip-off hood with super soft micro fleece internal cuffs. the only bummers are perhaps the zippers that are a bit too loud for my fussy fashion polar bear in my igloo. available for $225 at marmot online store. by zz

macbook air knock off $260: what will be next?

only a few millimeters thicker than the official air
this is rather hilarious! as if the knock off vuitton and hermés bags weren't enough, our grand financiers and palls in china have made replica macbook airs to flood the market. I mean guys, how are we supposed to pay you back all those trillions of loans if you keep knocking off our stuff?

unlike the bags your valuables inside could be erased or lost in an event of failure of its chinese craftsmanship (itself an oxymoron). while we can at times understand why some savvy people would buy a plastic (gum coated canvas) goyard bag for $100 instead of the official over rated $2000+ a mac book air is actually worth its price for its innovation and craftsmanship if not for the support of a great company. as an added bonus on this clone you will note that a classical chinese intro song has replaced the mac start up sound. funny. definitely not a recommended purchase. by cd

bermuda triangle - at the spring projects

if i were in london right now i would be on my way to bermuda triangle. a group exhibition featuring jacob sutton and hana al sayed at the spring projects. this gallery is naturally blurring lines between 'professional creatives' and 'fine art' with a roster including jaime hayon and the like. the exhibition also features work by artist bruce ingram. by kl

Where are you andre?

after his truely inspired launch of benjamin bixby that premiered at barney's new york, in one of the worse times in retail economy, the producer, actor, designer took an unexpected vacation. on our end we can't wait to see him back. of all the newly launched lines by a slew of loser actors, singers and famous-for-no-reasons, andre was breath of fresh air. some one with a real sense of personal style and principle. we hope to see him back in full force. lots of love to the new BB. by xy

forget global warming: earth's north and south pole are shifting

"the magnetic field inside the earth is turning independently at a rate different from that of the earth. during a potential reversal, the magnetic field does not vanish. they just gets more complicated. a south magnetic pole might emerge over africa, for instance, or a north pole over tahiti." you can throw away your compasses now.

this is not the sci-fi film you watched last weekend, its NASA and BBC reporting: "the earth's magnetic field is changing: compass needles in Africa are drifting about 1 degree per decade. this shift has accelerated in the recent years and at this rate there could be a complete reversal of earths poles." what would that mean for it inhabitants? the poles continued to shift during the 20th century, at an average speed of 10 km per year, in recent years accelerating to 40 km per year. at this rate the north pole will exit north america and reach siberia in just a few decades.

in case your plan B was to escape using your miles on virgin galactic here's some bad weather reports from mars: "data from NASA's mars global surveyor and odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps" near mars' south pole are diminishing for three summers in a row."

the magnetic fields on earth have completely reversed in the past. meaning the north and the south poles swap places. such reversals are recorded in the magnetism of ancient rocks. they come at irregular intervals averaging about 300,000 years; the last one was 780,000 years ago. sounds like its about time?

some background: "james ross located the pole for the first time in 1831 after an exhausting arctic journey during which his ship got stuck in the ice for four years. no one returned until the next century. In 1904, 73 years later, roald amundsen found the pole again and discovered that it had moved--at least 50 km since the days of Ross. 50 km in 70+ years." and now 40k in just 1 year. yikes!!! lady gaga seems like a real important topic suddenly!!! excerpts from www.nasa.gov. also see BBC: is the earth preparing to flip? by dd

not to shoot down hermes or anything... just a pic from our friends at "it's very hip". this image stood out for me, a throw back into the days of john zorn and super 8 but reverse engineered, if you know what I mean. p.s. guns generally suck in our opinion, of course unless they're made by nikon. by dd

LAMOCA presents a "performance" by artist francesco vezzoli featuring lady gaga. as far as i'm concerned, vezzoli is to art what gaga is to music... so once again, i guess we haven't missed much by not being in LA. by pp'

serge on screen

after the che, frida, johnny cash and so on, it's now serge gainsbourg's life to be on screen. it's been a while since i first heard of this movie, and it eventually hit the screens these days. as you can guess, every serge fan can be skeptical about such a thing, and i recently heard an interview of jane birkin saying she was uncomfortable about it, so i really don't know what to think of it. i'll check it for sure with my repetto's on! by pp'

lady gaga Dissected: why this bad romance with art sucks

first i have to ask myself this: why even bother with a post on lady gaga? well the answer must be the same as george mallory's when asked why he climbed mount Everest? "because it's there." well maybe im giving her too much credit but lady gaga is indeed hard to miss. i suppose that's an achievement by itself these days, to be famous for no particular reason... at least gaga is doing something. even paris hilton 'respects' her (now THAT... means something). but what is this "something"? for me its the holly and the unholly mixture in this calculated cocktail that is scary. the mixture of things i love and the things i passionately hate all mangled into one. almost impossible to decipher. a hotdog made out of culture. it sure has fooled a lot of people but here's why...

calculated bottom-rack pop – candy coated with a shinny facade of top-shop art:
active ingredients: tear off a page from a matthew barney catalog (its ok to be weird, just soften barney a bit so its digestible) + chop some vito acconci (be sure to wash and disinfect all grit) + a dash of warhol (the bit everyone knows about will do fine) + artifically colored dark lyrics (just dark enough - but not too dark) blend with inactive ingredients: blatant commercialism (feel free to put madonna to shame, get 4 brands to sponsor the same video why just 1) + perfect USDA supermarket approved pop vocals (so middle management and cab drivers alike can get into the groove) + emulate michael jacksons moves, again (as best as you can. no need to try hard, no one will know) + grate 5 crates of marketing spin-masters + top with colorless, tasteless, water soluble shinny gelatin.

enjoy. by dd

Waris Ahluwalia's love letter of a book: to india with love

since the crash of the economy it seems like we are all attending more parties rather than pulling late nighters. that, i assume, is the silver lining in all of this. the good news is that not all parties are just to wine-and-dine new yorks newest most-needy-class. this was waris' week. this shindig, at the newly re-opened pierre hotel (owned previously by the 4 seasons group) had something substantial behind it, an effort to remind us of not only the beauty of india, but to support the victims of mumbai's 2008 terrorist attack.

the book is filled with memories and photographs of contributors like silvia fendi, elizabeth hurley, natalie portman, owen wilson and the like from their past visits to india. owen wilsons photo taken by his mom was one that stood out for me. unfortunately the book, published by respected publisher assouline, was rather disappointing for its lack of attention to detail and their hack-saw compositions. the love put in by waris and the gang somehow did not translate into the assouline's team. that said, i personally bought 2 books and highly recommend a copy as the proceeds will go directly to the victims of the attack. hard cover $49.95

contributors include: Adrien Brody, Kenneth Cole, Silvia Fendi, Diane von Furstenberg, Elizabeth Hurley, Evelyn Lauder, Natalie Portman, Rachel Roy, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Williamson, among others. to learn more mumbai: we got your back. by dd

Nike: easy-breezy tennis V's

white and gery nike velcro tennis classic V

i don't know why but im really into easy-breezy cover-girl mode (sorry j, i'm stealing your line here) and loving these nike tennis-classic Vs in white and grey. the lack of color, and the simple shape accented by the velcro is the easy look i need with comfy jeans and a thick sweater. i know they look like the ones i already have and posted earlier this year, but against everyone's wishes, i still like them new and white. available at mita sneakers ¥ 7,870 (approx $90 USD). by dd

joey roth Semi-audiophile ceramic speakers: for your ipod or computer

made from porcelain, cork, and baltic birch

standard banana plugs (fine- but the pink cables are questionable. surely you can plug some kimber PBG's and hotwire it on your own)

tripath amplifier made of stainless steel sheet metal, with a cast iron base and paulownia volume slider, toggle switch. beautiful!!

no word on the quality of sound since this has not hit the market as of yet, but just from its construction and material it will surely sound better than any consumer end product and it obviously looks great. once we audit this we will post another. in the meantime here's a few specs from the designer/manufacturer joey roth:

"the ceramic speakers are made from porcelain, cork, and baltic birch. each material is minimally finished, left to add its natural beauty to the design. the included amplifier is made from stainless steel sheet metal, with a cast iron base and paulownia volume slider. aside from the electronic components, plastic is completely avoided in the system’s construction. typical speakers are designed to play even the most compressed or poorly recorded track. they gloss over the details that give high-resolution music its depth. the ceramic speakers’ custom-made drivers, porcelain and cork enclosures, and tripath amplifier reveal every nuance. they will show the difference between lossless and mp3 files, and will unlock vinyl’s richness." available december 2009 priced under $500 by pp+dd

Nike Stages private reception at Deitch gallery new york

edward kim and our sweet richard chai

zac posen christopher niquet

david selig cecilia dean brian malloy

my favorite piece in the show, tom sachs

tom sachs demonstrating the piece to lance

jose parla and jeffrey deitch

this past friday's opening at the deitch projects was rather involved. it was the follow up to the paris mash-up openning at the galerie emmanuel perrotin that I missed and have been cursing myself ever since. the mixture of sports stars like lance armstrong and fashion gurus like richard chai and the girls from threeasfour made it a fun evening. even mr. andre saraiva poped in for a fag or two.

the work was quite nice but rather oddly curated. i was under the impression that one could get arrested in new york for putting kenny sharf and ed ruscha in one room. but apparently not. aside from that there were some impressive mixture of streeters and heavy hitters. raymond pettibon next to gursky, shepard fairey next to gai guo-qiang... tom sach's bicycle titled "lances tequila bike for girls" was quite an amusement piece and perhaps my favorite. funny and cool. my second favorite piece was eric whites "foyer"... i couldn't help but think of john baldessari's balls!!

it was a good evening which was eventually topped off by sushi, plenty of sake and my favorite... sesame ice cream...

show is on display through november 21. don't miss it. other works included pieces by: jules de balincourt, KAWS, richard prince, christopher wool, aaron young, futura, and others. all artwork on display, available for purchase, with proceeds directly benefiting the lance armstrong foundation for cancer. by dd

last wednesday evening we walked passed the sam haskins show and the new yorker magazines guest-list to enter an intimate showing of house of waris' ss-2010 collection at phillips de pury auction house. the event was an antithesis to the jane hotel fashion week dance-in. this time the gathering was ubber exlusive and the pieces guarded by more security than guests. the location of course added to the aura of waris and his exclusive collection, each piece handmade and magically blessed. waris' signature orange-and-gold tent was set up and champagne was conveniently at hand. by uh

chez cartier

a beautiful sneak at cartier paris headquarters's secret room where designers are coming up with new things. thanks to the great mister terestchenko.

"In a little room next to the workshop itself, there is a library full of books and magazines on botanic and wild life to support the inspiration of the designers.

Some of them are very common publications but handy enough to study the general anatomy of a panther, a giraffe, a turtle etc...

There are also some rare books. First, the project is sculpted in a piece of wax in different variations, sometimes painted to imitate the gems.

After a long process and final approval, the model in wax, turned into precious stones, is simply tucked away in a chocolate box, a Godiva chocolat box to be precise.

my twisted meditation for the day : by hunter s. thompson

Hunter S. Thompson fax excerpts:

"Dear Holly,

Okay, you lazy bitch, I'm getting tired of this waterhead fuckaround that you're doing with The Rum Diary.

We are not even spinning our wheels aggresivly. It's like the whole Project got turned over to Zombies who live in cardboard boxes under the Hollywood Freeway... I seem to be the only person who's doing anything about getting this movie Made. I have rounded up Depp, Benicio Del Toro, Brad Pitt, Nick Nolte & a fine screenwriter from England, named Michael Thomas, who is a very smart boy & has so far been a pleasure to talk to & conspire with...

So there's yr. fucking Script & all you have to do now is act like a Professional & Pay him. What the hell do you think Making a Movie is all about? Nobody needs to hear any more of that Gibberish about yr. New Mercedes & yr. Ski Trips & how Hopelessly Broke the Shooting Gallery is.... If you're that fucking Poor you should get out of the Movie Business. It is no place for Amateurs & Dilletants who don't want to do anything but "take lunch" & Waste serious people's Time."

SUICIDE: better late than never

i've been listening to nothing but 'alan vega' and 'suicide' for the past few days (with gratitude to hd) and i can't help but be so so impressed by their work, 30+ years later. i hear so many future bands in their body of work its quite amazing how influential they were. searching, i found this clip, worth sharing. i think maybe great music can only exist when you have no audience in mind... and even then it can still fail. i suppose that goes for everything that ends up being truly special. by dd
